Binge Living

I keep waking up in a morning to the sound of people talking about the binge drinking culture on the radio. I usually have a touch of a hangover, too.

Let's face it, drinking more than is healthy is a popular pastime in this country, but why are we getting so stressed about it? According to the press, it seems that it's because when Britons get drunk, they get aggressive, unlike our European friends who are all lovely and calm and civilised.

Oversimplifications R us. But whatever else booze is, it is a truth serum. It doesn't bring out your dark side or make you do things you wouldn't dream of doing sober. It brings out the you that is a little way under the surface, and makes you do things you DO dream doing sober, but restrain yourself.

In other words, if you're happy and well-adjusted, you'll be great company when you're drunk. If you're angry with your life, your boss or your libido, then you'll be a horrible embarrassment when you go over the edge. Simple really.

So we can conclude that a major difference between the British and other Europeans is that we British are collectively pissed off. But what about?

Some of my friends reckon that people who like rock music are generally friendlier than people who don't. Certainly the Corporation always feels very friendly to me compared to other clubs.

So maybe the cure to the modern British disease is, simply, we need to rock more...

Oi Andy - sign your posts (unless you're Ed, in which case, sign your posts!)

Interesting points to make Andy - I assume you read the same article in the Guardian as me, in which the writer illustrates that we're a nation of piss heads, and always have been since the middle ages! Proud... I almost saluted!

Drink, on a scale of 1 to 10, is very good. If it's good enough for monks, then it's good enough for me. Holy water.

What isn't so good, is that I went to buy your EP (finally) from The Laundrette, and they're out of stock. Boo hiss. Anywhere else I can get it?

We probably get "stressed about it" due to the huge amounts of people who die each year due to alcohol related diseases, the families whose lives are destroyed due to alcoholism and the destruction it lives in our towns and cities every weekend.

Lillian, we've got the CD's to get to the launderette, as soon as we've got our collective fingers out of our arses.

Anonymous, you're right - alcohol can well be a hopelessly destructive drug. But I think Andy is questioning the underlying reasons as to why violence and anger seems to flow so readily when the beers do in high streets across the land, and that is something that’s worth considering. Maybe we come across as being rather blasé about alcohol – that’s because in real life we are, but I think it’s only fair to acknowledge the validity of your point.

Anonymous - excellent work at completely missing the fucking point of what Andy just wrote there. Did you skim read it? Hmm? Or is this just the day of the week that you allocate to visiting blogs and leaving sanctimonious and self righteous comments?

As you were.

Calm down Ed! It's only a blog. I hoped to get a bit of discussion, it's a shame that Anonymous misread the paragraph, but at least he/she has said something, which is more than, say, Extraneous has......
